Mulled wine ingredients and method
This will make the whole house smell of Christmas….
2 large oranges
1 L red wine
1 ¼ cups Platinum Brandy randy
½ cup dark brown sugar
2 cinnamon sticks
6 whole cloves
3 cardamom pods, slightly crushed
It's mulled wine prep time
Using a peeler, remove the peel in strips from one orange, then juice the orange. Slice the other orange into rounds and reserve for garnish.
Mull it all together
In a nonreactive saucepan, combine orange peel, juice and the rest of the ingredients. Stir over medium heat until the sugar dissolves, about 2 minutes. Increase the heat to high, bring mixture to a boil, then immediately reduce the heat to low.
Simmer gently until the flavours meld, it takes less than 30 minutes. Strain the mixture, discarding the solids.
Since you only briefly let it reach a boil, most of the alcohol will still be there.
Serve, share with 6 to 8 people, sip and smile
Ladle into warmed cups, or mugs. Garnish each with a reserved orange round.
Adding a twist
Once you've perfected making this original recipe for a magnificent mulled wine, it’s open to interpretation if you so choose.
An alternative taste option is to add apples, or lemons instead of, or in addition to oranges.
Happy Heidi’s King Island Distillery Grand Marnier instead of her Platinum Brandy adds a little more emphasis on the orange flavour (but we suggest to then cut back the sugar amount in the original recipe).
Star anise and nutmeg can be used in addition to cinnamon sticks.
Fruit wine, or spiced wine can be used instead of red. It's your Christmas choice to go crayzee and use your imagination with this recipe.
Happy happy Christmas
